Our lab member Darja took part as a delegate from Wikimedia Estonia at the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2025 in Thessaloniki, Greece – a gathering that brought together contributors and advocates of free knowledge from across Central and Eastern Europe.
The discussions covered exciting and timely topics, such as the potential future roles of AI in Wikipedia’s development as well as the ethical challenges and risks that AI may pose to neutrality and reliability. Another highlight was the introduction of new educational programs featuring video lectures that illustrate Wikipedia’s core values, such as neutrality and notability, through concrete, real-world examples. The meeting also featured updates on the Wikipedia Library project, which provides editors access to a wide range of sources – not only scientific publications, but also newspapers and journals – helping strengthen the quality and credibility of Wikipedia articles. Participation in such events strengthens our shared mission: to advance open knowledge and collaboration. Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the institute’s summer days, which brought together colleagues from various departments in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere. The program featured short presentations introducing each department’s research topics. Our workgroup was represented by Tõnis Laasfeld, who gave a concise overview of our main research directions. One of the highlights was a group drumming session, where the shared rhythm fostered a strong sense of unity. The event also included sports activities and time to enjoy the sauna. On the second day, discussions focused on ideas for making the institute even better, and the informal setting helped strengthen our sense of community and collaboration. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow researchers outside the lab and enjoy the final days of summer together.
